“No Bad Blood”: President Mahama Rejects Judiciary Rift, Calls for Stronger Ties

Date:

President John Dramani Mahama has firmly dismissed allegations of a strained relationship between his administration and the judiciary, emphasizing his government’s commitment to maintaining a strong partnership with the legal fraternity.

Reaffirming Commitment to Judicial Cooperation

Speaking at a gathering of the Ghana Bar Association on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, President Mahama addressed concerns over perceived tensions between his government and the judiciary. He reassured legal professionals that his administration remains dedicated to upholding the rule of law and fostering open dialogue.

“Government is open to working with you, particularly on our side of the political divide. There’s this perception that we have a problem with the legal fraternity and things like that,” he stated, dismissing claims of discord.

A Call for Strengthening the Justice System

President Mahama underscored the need for continuous engagement between the government and the judiciary, highlighting that collaboration is essential to reinforcing Ghana’s justice system and ensuring judicial independence.

“We’re not people who have any such animosity towards the judiciary and the legal fraternity. So our doors are open,” he assured, signaling his willingness to work closely with legal professionals to strengthen Ghana’s democratic institutions.

Recognizing Legal Expertise in Governance

The President also pointed to key figures within his administration as evidence of his government’s respect for the judiciary. He specifically mentioned former Attorney General Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, noting that her appointment was a testament to his administration’s recognition of legal expertise and its commitment to judicial integrity.

By incorporating experienced legal minds into his government, Mahama emphasized that his administration values the role of the judiciary in national development.

Moving Forward: A United Front for Justice

As Ghana continues to navigate legal and governance challenges, President Mahama’s remarks serve as a call for unity and constructive engagement between the executive and judicial branches. His assurance of open dialogue and collaboration aims to dispel any lingering misconceptions and reinforce a shared commitment to justice and democracy.

With these reassurances, Mahama signals a path forward—one built on mutual respect, legal integrity, and a shared vision for a stronger judicial system in Ghana.
